Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has two main modalities: Acupuncture and Herbal Therapy. In both cases the practitioner establishes a diagnosis based on: Etiology, Pattern Differentiation, and Prognosis of a disease. The treatment is based on the TCM diagnosis, and in herbal therapy consists of prescribing a combination of herbal and / or natural ingredients for internal and / or external use. Although it is the common belief that herbs are safe, herbal therapy is only safe when practiced by a licensed and qualified practitioner, since many natural ingredients are poisonous and toxic or could produce unfavorable results when wrongly prescribed.

How does it work?

Through 2000 years of clinical trials on patients, and now combining that with the modern research, a combination of herbs and natural substances are prescribed according to the patient’s individual needs so for example two people with migraine might receive two different prescription because they have different patterns of imbalance. The herbs and natural substances selection is based on their classification according to Chinese Medicine, these classifications are based on the properties and actions of each substance. These properties and actions of each substance and their classic combinations have been clinically established over the centuries. In many cases pills or capsules might be prescribed.

How long should I take the herbal medicine?

It takes many years for a chronic disease to develop and present itself, therefore the length of time for which the herbal treatment needs to be followed depends on many factors such as the history of the disease, the overall vitality of the patient, and how well the patient follows the prescriptions and suggestion on diet and lifestyle. In any case in TCM patients are not expected to take herbal medicine for life or much extended periods of time, except for cancer or some other potentially fatal conditions.

How safe is herbal therapy?

Herbal therapy is a very safe treatment when performed by a licensed practitioner.

The safety or toxicity of herbs and other naturally substances have been well researched and studied, and there is an ever-growing database of scientific studies on individual herbs or in combination, therefore a qualified herbalist is able to ensure the safety of prescribed formulas in majority of the cases. However, caution is required when a patient is taking Pharmaceutical medications to ensure no adverse interaction takes place between the herbs and the medications.

Acupuncture: Is it a safe treatment method?

Yes, acupuncture is a very safe treatment when performed by a licensed practitioner.
All the needles used are disposable and only used on one patient.
